So, you can shop ’til you drop and get a bit of culture, all in one!

The project is a collaboration with ‘classic’ model Daphne Selfe, a supermodel of her profession, entitled “Portrait of Genius” and runs from 21 March – 17 May.

The concept behind the exhibition is to produce a set of images that refer to Old Master paintings and the notion of Genius. However, the intent of the work is to question the real meaning of the word as it is a male specific term and can’t semantically be applied to women.

Marko said “By using Daphne I’ve been able to investigate ongoing concepts of the male exclusivity of genius and question the status of the male gaze and the female object. The subject has influenced Western society’s pre-conceptions of gender roles throughout the history of art.

Also the exhibition investigates the lineage of fashion photography and its historic links to fine art painting, a subject which is central to my practice.”

Daphne Selfe has a wide-ranging profile having been photographed by photographers including Rankin and Nick Knight. She has appeared in the UK TV series ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ and in Will Young’s Video for ‘Light My Fire’. She has also been photographed for a variety of designer campaigns including Moschino and she was photographed by Mario Testino for Dolce & Gabbana. Meanwhile, Marko has exhibited in National and International publications and books and won 36 major photography awards since 2004. He was nominated for the British Professional Fashion photographer of the Year in 2006 and his work has been exhibited widely including the RWA’s ‘Through the Lens exhibition’ in 2008 and several times with the Royal Photographic Society.

With many years experience Robin Conway has become a master of these techniques, creating stunning images of a strange new reality. His ability to understand and anticipate his subject’s next move allows him to capture the most electrifying moments and expose the true beauty of these instances.

The resulting images are a depiction of breathtaking illusionism where human bodies appear to be floating effortlessly and peacefully through space. It is an alien world in which gravity and atmosphere no longer hold sway. Light effects, bubbles, and unusual shadows take us into a different reality which is not just created, but also discovered by the photographer.

Robin Conway’s work can also be considered as fashion photography: he is influenced by this industry, absorbing its techniques, adapting and developing them to create his own distinctive vision.

His exhibition runs at the Red Gate Gallery, 209a Coldharbour Lane, London from 24-30 April 2009.

The calendar comprises 13 breathtaking shots – one for each month of the year plus the cover photo.

“The images chosen for my 2009 calendar are from a trip to Kenya, early in 2008. This was a turbulent time for Kenya as political unrest and riots resulted in a huge impact on visitor numbers to the country. However, determined as ever to go, my wife and I travelled to the Masai Mara, staying once again at Governors main camp.

“This was the first time I had ever experienced the Masai Mara with green grass, not brown! This was a result of the tremendous rain and thunderstorms that frequently deluged the plains, and our tent!” recounts Michael.

“Fortunately for us, the heavy rains came at night. However, during the day the build up of storm clouds dispersed with sunshine bathing the plains and animals in a truly spectacular light. January’s image of the hippo and November’s image of the tree and elephants show the quality of the outstanding light.”
